Hadley Art

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

What draws people to buy Hadley Pottery?  The art.  The pottery’s quality and durability keeps them coming back, but it is the art that grabs our attention.  The genius behind the art was the founder, Mary Alice Hadley.  Closer examination reveals an astounding variety.  Most of her designs relied on strong lines like the portraits on plates displayed in the windows.  Others have intricate patterns and colors.  Most of her forms are abstract.

Some of the founder’s original works are on display revealing that the stoneware like clay was not the only medium used by the artist. Production considerations limit the colors of the pottery because although glazes are made on site, they must be compatible with the process.

Here is a sampling of the art you can see hanging in the showroom ( click on images to enlarge them).
